24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic has begun his Roland Garros title defense with a hard-fought opening win against Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4 7-6 3 6-4. The Serbian star, who is still seeking his first title of 2024, improved to 15-6 on the season overall and 7-3 on clay. The 37-year-old became the oldest champion in the tournament's history last year, and he is now the favorite to win again this year.
Djokovic will face either Gael Monfils or Lorenzo Musetti in the third round. Monfils is a former world number 6 who has won 11 ATP titles, while Musetti is a rising star who has already reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam. Djokovic will be favored against either opponent, but he will need to be at his best to reach the latter stages of the tournament.
